Wikidata with Andy Mabbett

The Committee was fortunate to have Andy Mabbett (Wikipedian in Residence at ORCID in Perth during his Wikidata Tour Down Under.  He provided some insightful information on Wikipedia and Wikidata, which forms part of the Wikimedia Foundation project.

The main aim of Andy’s talk was to inform people how to employ unique identifiers used by the GLAM sector. These unique identifiers enable people to create multiple records by using one set of metadata or dataset. Andy also talked about other Wikipedia initiatives such as Wikiquotes, Wikisource, QuickStatements, Wikidata game, Open Streetmap and Crotos.
Andy encouraged people to write articles on any research they have completed and to upload it to Wikipedia. This is a great initiative, and libraries are encouraged to get on board.
The President of Wikimedia Australia, Mr Gideon Digby also provided a summary of the Toodyaypedia project which is run by the Shire of Toodyay. This amazing project makes use of QR codes, which are placed around the town, as well as museums to link articles to Wikipedia. The Toodyaypedia project is considered one of the most significant Wikipedia projects worldwide. Well done to Toodyay!.
That said, please stay tuned for an ALIAWest event on editing Wikipedia as a group.
